Turkey is AWESOME.

So much to tell you, and there’s a line for this computer. I think the little girl waiting for it just wants to chat with her friends though.

We were nowhere near Istanbul when the bombing occurred, and apparently it was in the suburbs, so we most likely would not have been effected.

Full posts next week and the week after.

Hope everyone is well!

So far, not so good.

Good morning. It’s about 5:45 your time, but getting close to noon here.

I’m here at Heathrow Airport, where due to unforeseen circumstances British Airways has made me miss my connection. The next flight to Istanbul is a mere five and a half hours from now. They’ve given me an exit row seat, and a voucher worth ten pounds at selected shops here in Terminal 5, but I’m really nauseous right now, totally exhausted from not sleeping much, and I’ve got a headache to boot, and I can’t stick the voucher in the internet machine (although I suppose with a headache I’m sort of wasting money anyway).

This is not how I had hoped my vacation would begin.

I’m not even sure if I’m supposed to contact the travel agency, as I’m not sure that they’d be rescheduling the airport transfer that is supposed to be waiting for me when I arrive. Although you’d think there’d be other tour passengers who were on my flight and are now in the same predicament. PSB I think is already in Istanbul, maybe even to the hotel. She has her BlackBerry but I’m not sure if it’s going to work or not. I’ve tried to e-mail her. . .

I will hopefully write again in a few days with more positive reports on my travels. Until then, I remain kvetchily yours.

And, we’re off!

PSB is already on her flight. I’m about to call a car.

I will most likely do some sort of globetrotting elititude post while out there.

Other Polenbergs, for the love of kvetchery, please post in the meantime.

I am going to kill someone,

Filed under: Kvetch! Kvetch! Kvetch! — Twin C @ 11:12 am

and it’s 32 minutes before my mid year review so the timing isn’t great.

One of the extra people I am supporting, while I was away on vacation, has decided to make me as miserable as possible. While I am relatively sure it’s not on purpose, I am not 100% convinced.

The man sends in an expense report for $90, which is totally unnecessary to begin with. And he creates it totally wrong - adding two smaller charges together into one charge, which makes the expense reporting system ask for a receipt. Except that he’s lost one of the two receipts he needs to show that it’s two separate charges put together into one larger charge. And then he asks me to fix it. And the really dumb part is, he rounded the expense up! It’s only by a dime, but when you’re already jocking the system and doing things incorrectly, don’t you want to do as little wrong as possible????!?!!?!?

He also had a bad BlackBerry, which I tried fixing for him a number of times to no avail, and while I was on vacation, instead of calling up the warranty line and getting a replacement for free, as he was supposed to, just goes and buys himself a new one, then leaves me to call AT&T and asks them if he can send back the broken one, under warranty, and get his money back for the new one. Everyone know that’s not how it works, but there I was, spending an hour on the phone, at least 15 minutes of it on hold, with AT&T. We ended up getting a replacement for the broken BlackBerry, so we can at least use it for a new colleague, so it’s not a total loss.

This is a fricking DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY ISN’T HE SMART??????????????

And, our network printers were all messed up yesterday. I think they’re back today, but it was still super annoying.

I’m so glad I’m leaving again in two days. At least the horrible yacker/sneezer is still out. It’s still nice and quiet.

I made it.

7:35 a.m.: I leave Twin D a voice mail singing him a song of my awesome work ethic, making it on time, even being slightly hung over from a few drinks with a friend last night, and then staying up too late creating a character on a free-ish MMORPG and killing a bunch of wolves. (Sorry, wolves.) My character is a ranger, named MichaelBoltin. Friends don’t let friends create characters while tipsy.

7:45 a.m.: I make it down to the conference room with all the paperwork my manager asked me to bring for him.

7:55 a.m.: I’m surrounded by conference room technicians, as we all tried to do the same thing - get the internet conference up and running.

8:05 a.m.: It becomes apparent that (once again) the internet conference isn’t going to work properly, and the 15 people in the room want to get started, including the guy on the teleconference who can’t see the slides. (The manager ended up e-mailing them all to him.)

8:15 a.m.: I am terrified that I am going to be trapped in the conference room all day with them, as because I had been sitting in front of the computer, they were making me advance all their slides for them.

8:25 a.m.: I manage to escape. PHEW!

I’m back at my desk now and I’m feeling much better. Two of my other managers and another colleague and I are all going out to lunch at noon to celebrate all of our birthdays - that should be fun.

Evite Embarrassment

Filed under: PolenBabble, Kvetch! Kvetch! Kvetch! — Twin C @ 9:14 pm

On relatively short term notice, I’ve sent out an invite for a pre-birthday party this Saturday, using Evite, and I’ve started obsessively counting the number of attendees (”Yowza!”) vs. non-attendees (”Negorative.”).

I have a history of not being able to put parties together. My senior year of college, a few weeks before I graduated, I invited a whole ton of people over for a happy hour one night - I put a sign up on the theater bulletin board, and told everyone I knew they should stop by for a few drinks before their plans that evening - I myself had tickets to see “The Heidi Chronicles” that night. Two people showed up. I drank so much in disgrace that I was horribly hung over during the show, which was awkward since I had second row seats, and my head hurt so badly I could barely look up to see the stage. Hopefully the cast didn’t really notice (I knew them all, and was friends with a few of them).

So ever since then, I’ve always been nervous about trying to get friends together - even last year, when I had a wonderful turnout, on a weeknight, no less. I still get scared that people aren’t going to come. So every time I open up the evite, I hope and pray that the attendees will outnumber the non-attendees.

So far, so good.

The ole back to work shank.
