Okay, so now I’m shilling.

Well, not exactly shilling, definitely pitching, but it’s for a really good cause. Our aunt at Family Focus Adoption Services is making a call for donations - here’s her message if you care to donate, or want to pass the message along. The agency specializes in finding homes for special needs children - they do wonderful work and are known throughout the country. If you have a little extra dough, please consider donating.

If you pass this along, I want it stated right up front that this email is originating from someone closely connected to FAMILY FOCUS ADOPTION SERVICES:

You probably already know that we are a twenty year old not-for-profit adoption agency in Queens, NY whose goal is to find homes for the 800+ children in the New York State foster care system who are waiting for Forever Families. Because of the innovative, dedicated work that we do, approximately 97% of the children we place become finalized adopted children in permanent loving families.

Families do not pay fees to adopt New York State foster children. Being a not-for-profit agency, without government contracts or large funders, we live “hand-to-mouth,” relying on the small fees we collect for some of our services, and on donations and the occasional grants we receive. And it is not enough.

Here is how we are hoping that this email does something magical, and allows us to continue our important work:

We have calculated that if we can create an Endowment Fund of just $10 Million, it will allow us to continue to do our work helping children indefinitely!

I am hoping that I have enough friends and family that if

…we can reach this goal! $10 million, $10 at a time, to help 800+ children who have been waiting years for FOREVER FAMILIES - and you can help with only $10! I hope when I put it this way, it doesn’t sound like so much. Believe it or not, that’s all it will take.

PLEASE visit our website at to find out more about us. And if you are willing to participate, there is even a “DONATE NOW” button (on the left of the home page) that takes you to a page where you can make a donation quickly and easily through PAYPAL.

CHECK BACK TO THE SITE OFTEN - WE WILL POST UPDATES ON OUR WEBSITE TO LET YOU KNOW OUR PROGRESS TOWARD OUR GOAL! (We only started today, and already are getting notices of $10 donations!)

And then – please decide if you are comfortable sharing this email with YOUR friends and family who may be looking for a wonderful, worthwhile charity to which they can contribute….only $10. The children who are waiting to be adopted really need your help, right now. It would take just a tiny amount of time for you to forward this, with your note on top of my letter, and maybe changing the subject line to show your name instead of mine. The hope, of course, is that your friends and family would then be willing to forward it too - with their name in the subject line, and their personal note on top of yours.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!

P.S. If you know of someone who is part of a charitable organization that offers grants or makes donations, or if your workplace supports not-for-profit causes, we would be happy to set up an appointment to do a presentation, or send a proposal. Just let us know!

I was hoping for a Twin A cameo, but no luck.  I think we get a glimpse of Chowderly, though.

Twin C’s Home Improvement Lesson #6327841

You can’t use regular drill bits when drilling tile.

I found this out last night installing a wall mount mirror by our kitchen sink, which doubles as our bathroom sink.  (As I’ve been told, we have a European bathroom, similar to a water closet, except we happen to have a tub in our water closet.)  If I had been clever, I would have researched this before attempting, but after a few minutes of not getting anywhere, I could tell I needed a new bit.  I hopped online and called Twin A, and fortunately he happened to be home, and even more fortunately had a whole bunch of the correct type of drill bit - masonry bits.  As he’s now just a 15 minute walk away, I headed over to get the bit, as well as some masking tape, to follow a tip suggested by the website.  (Twin A, for the record, has about 50 rolls of tape.  The only roll of masking tape was the 49th roll he looked at.)  I grabbed the bit and the tape, headed home, and drilled through that tile like a champ!  The mirror is now installed, and looks a tiny bit crooked (I did my best to keep it even, but it wasn’t easy) but pretty good.  PSB is pleased.

We had also hoped to install the somewhat overly priced shelving system from the Container Store last night - they were supposed to deliver anywhere from 7 p.m. to midnight.  At 12:04 a.m. the doorbell rang, just as I was leaving a disgruntled message on their voice mail.  It was far too late to start working on it, so I will do it tonight, after a jaunt with Axelrot to Barcade, where I will get schooled in any number of old timey video games.  I can’t wait!  I need to go pick up some more drill bits today though.  And a tape measure.  PSB has one from her grandfather, but it’s only six feet, and over the years it seems to have picked up some sort of horrible stench - we’re not sure how.  We call it “the stank measure”.  It’s just a little too short and a little too stinky for future needs. . .

the Bloggaversary of the Polenblog!!!!

HOORAY!!!  Three years of kvetching!  Three years of mockery!  Three years of links to all kinds of stuff!

Power to the Polenbergs!

Worst. Friday. Ever.

Filed under: PolenBabble, Kvetch! Kvetch! Kvetch! — Twin C @ 10:43 am

You would think that with it being Good Friday, I wouldn’t have to do much or put up with much.

Instead, I have the horrible woman who sits opposite me, on the other side of my cube, who happens to have the most annoying voice ever created and is a horrible bitch to boot, talking very loudly into her phone, which happens to be on speaker phone in the office over my left shoulder, so I get to hear every sentence twice!  The managers on this floor are also really fond of leaving their doors open while having loud conversations, so I am constantly bombarded by three loud talkers at once.  Plus, the bitch on the other side clears her throat every five minutes, which create a sound so horrible and irritating that it should be bottled and sold as a sand blaster.  As if this woman couldn’t get any worse, she is constantly having computer problems, and every time she talks to a tech, she starts speaking extra loud, and says every word one. at. a. time. as. if. she’s. talking. to. an. imbecile.  Pot, meet the freaking kettle.

On top of that, my team members are asking me to do their team member work, instead of them handling it like they should and leaving me alone in my misery. I’m praying that they send us home early today, it kind of being a holiday and all.

Last night I went to see The Homecoming, with Ian McShane, Michael McKean, and Raul Esparza (who I saw in Company last year) - it’s fantastic.  A really really warped play.  Amazingly performed.  It’s up for a few more weeks.  Go see it if you get the chance!

In other exciting news, our apartment is slowly coming together - we had a semi-tragedy last weekend, as the wardrobe I purchased online turned out to also be too shallow to hold regular sized hangers.  After a pretty large internet hunt and a trip to the Container Store and $100 later, I think the hanger situation is finally under control.   They’re still a little too small for my shirts, but they’ll do.  We’ve also bought an extending make-up mirror for PSB’s glamour and my shaving, and a sweet ass shower radio.  Plus, a bunch of gifts for PSB’s birthday (Monday!) have come in.

Tonight Twirlygurl and Grimbil are in from London, so we’re meeting them for drinks at a cheesy hotel bar in midtown.  Before that I’ll be having dinner in K-town with some friends.  Mmmmmmmmm, bulgogi!

Two AMAZING things to vote for!!!

First, The Moth put out their first podcast on iTunes last week, and they’ve skyrocketed up to 10th place or higher for “most popular daily podcast”!  If you haven’t gotten it yet, please download it and rate it five stars, and keep The Moth at the top of the list!  Here’s a direct link: or, if you’re not using iTunes:

Also, our good friends the McKleinfelds have been chosen as finalists in an online movie contest for the upcoming remake of “Prom Night” - here’s the link to the contest:  Their movie is “Revenge of the Prom” - it’s very funny.  Please vote for them.  Often, if you’d like.
