All Boxed In

Filed under: PolenBabble, PolenNews — Twin C @ 11:26 am

I’ve hijacked PSB’s computer to say that the move is, well, going.  There’s SO MUCH STUFF.

We’ll have internet at our new home tomorrow.  I’ll be back on then.

Two Days

until the move.  The apartment is filled with empty boxes and filled boxes and packing supplies.  Our bed becomes more and more difficult to find.  The neighbors have placed a very large box right where the movers will probably need to go.  This will need to be remedied by Friday morning.  Probably earlier, as we’re going to have to start to put boxes out there - there’s just not enough room.

We’ve done an okay job of getting rid of things we don’t need - videotapes that have remained unwatched for the past two years, books that are never read - but we still have SO MUCH STUFF.  I don’t know what we’re going to do with it all once we get to the new place.

Leslie was super-mega-awesome and helped us pack some stuff up earlier in the week, and Jon L. has been hoarding boxes for us - I stopped by his office to get some on the way home with my daily hoard.  I hit the jackpot today (fortunate as I’m off for the rest of the week) and ended up with a rather huge, heavy bag of boxes.  I foolishly thought I could walk it from my office to Jon’s - ordinarily a 20 minute walk - but it soon became apparent that it was a terrible idea.  Fortunately, I was able to hail cabs without too much trouble. . .

A good opportunity to see some shows

Just got this e-mailed to me:

Really good stuff!  Of course, with PSB and I moving a week from today, it’s going to be hard to go to anything.  I really want to see The Quantum Eye.  People should go see Jump (it’s awesome), Oroonoko (it’s very good, and our friend Greg is in it), Stomp (also awesome), and Tim Minchin (I saw him at the Aspen Comedy Festival and he’s hysterical).  Altar Boyz is supposed to be great as well. . . there’s really a lot of good theater on there.  And did you know Crimes of the Heart was directed by Kathleen Turner?  I had no idea.

The Great Monitor Exchange

Filed under: HA!, PolenBabble — Twin C @ 8:36 pm

My new monitor arrived last night - free one day shipping is a beautiful thing.  Jon was home to receive it too, which was great timing.  So I began the process of swapping out The Behemoth:

As you can see, it takes up a lot of room.  It’s surrounded by all sorts of assorted crap.  Just for the record, that’s not a little container of lotion for use during internet pr0n bouts.  It’s sunscreen from my megahyperglobal pharma company that I never managed to put away in the bathroom.  The pr0n lotion is behind it.

I gave The Behemoth its last glimpse of the intarwebs, and then powered down.

Nighty night, gentle monster.

Next came the ugly part - getting behind the computer cabinet and moving the mother out.  When I first installed it, I had to cut open the back of the armoire to make it fit. It’s not pretty back there now.

Dude, I am so trashed.

I don’t think I’ve ever weighed it, so tonight when it was out I weighed myself, then myself holding it.  Behemoth Weight: 72 pounds.  Also known as: a nine year old child.  Or a golden retriever.  Or two and a third cinder blocks.  Etc. etc.

I tried to do a few size comparisons with a little rubber duckie.  The second one cracks me up for some reason.

Size Comparison #1     Size Comparison #2

The new monitor, still in the box, already wanted to assert its dominance:

Who’s your daddy???

After a quick vaccuuming of the area where The Behemoth was, as well as the inside of my computer (pretty dusty!), I took the new monitor out, and took a shot of the two of them to compare screen sizes:

New vs. Old

I also did a very rough measure - essentially, I’m losing a little bit of height, but gaining a good amount of width.  (Hmmm, sounds like some sort of weird ED commercial.)

I got the new monitor in, hooked her up, and turned on my computer, where I made a very unhappy discovery - my computer is so old, I couldn’t set it to the recommended display size!  Everything else I set it for looked kinda like crap.  Fortunately, after a few minutes of googling, I found a driver to update my video card (when I first went to the card’s website, I couldn’t find ANYTHING on it - they’re generations ahead at this point.  Good thing I’m getting a new computer soon!), got my computer to recognize the new monitor, rebooted, and. . . it could find the setting!

And now, my new monitor in action. . .

Tada! Who’s so handsome and sleek?

I don’t know why it looks all curved in the picture - it’s not that big!

So the question now is, um, does anyone want The Behemoth?  It still works pretty well.  I’ll give it to you for free.  You just have to come and get it.

UPDATE: Lem has claimed The Behemoth!  I warned him how fucking heavy it is and he wants it anyway. . .

2ND UPDATE: Lem changed his mind, and I haven’t heard from anyone else, so it’s now on Craig’s List: http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/zip/578717036.html

New Present for Twin C!

22″ of love.  Bought for a great price, with some of my “free money” from work.

Farewell, Behemoth (my old 21″ monitor that is soooooo big and heavy, but also awesome in its own way - I’ll get a picture up shortly).  You served me well.  I may put you on Craig’s List to see if anyone else wants you. . .

Got the flu? Go to work! Head hurts a little? Stay home.

True for me.  Maybe I didn’t have the flu a few weeks ago, but I had the nasty sore throat and the cough, but I didn’t feel all that sick, so I went to the office, probably infecting everyone in my wake (suckers!).  But this morning my head was aching, and I didn’t get much sleep last night, and since everyone I work for is at a meeting all day today, I stayed home.  I have to feel better by tonight, as Twin D and I have tickets to see Sunday in the Park with George - a rarely produced Sondheim.  Finally, someone else will understand when I randomly sing, “Look, I made a hat.”
