Mini Vacations

Filed under: PolenBabble, Kvetch! Kvetch! Kvetch! — Twin C @ 8:08 am

PSB is off to some Burning Man-esque gathering in upstate New York this weekend, via Westchester tonight, so I’ll have my run of the house. Saying that doesn’t mean very much right now, as we’re in an unusual situation - the landlords are cracking down again, and they sent Jon L., who actually has the apartment leased under his name (PSB is legally his roommate, but I am a squatter), documents saying they know he hasn’t been living in the apartment, and that either he has to move back in, or we all have to vacate. By September 1st.

This is obviously bad timing for any number of reasons, so Jon got himself a lawyer who happens to have dealt with this situation quite a bit, and he told Jon that he should move back in and the lawyer will send papers to the lawyer representing the landlord saying “Let’s Make A Deal”! Jon’s leased the apartment for a really long time, so he’s paying in rent probably half of what its value currently is (and it’s a great apartment, for what it is, but it’s not huge, and the bathroom is a little nasty [except for the tub, which I refinished this past spring, but neglected to blog about it - at the time, I was trying to keep it a secret from PSB, and then I just forgot], and the roof leaks in various spots), and to the landlords, it’s worth it to pay us some sort of settlement to move out, so they can renovate and then charge an assload for it, and make back what they paid us to move that much faster. So in order to play “hardball” with the landlords, Jon has moved back in, and in order to disrupt all our lives the least, PSB and I have moved back in to her old bedroom, which is now the living room, and we’re sleeping on an air mattress with about 10 blankets and Burning Man furs piled on top of it to make it a little more comfortable, and we gave Jon the bedroom, since he’s only here to sleep for the most part.

Since PSB is going to this camping thing, she’s taking the air mattress. Twin C gets the nest of blankets. (Jon actually said he’ll probably not be around all weekend, but I’ll probably just sleep in the nest anyway.)

We’re hoping this gets resolved by the end of September, with a decent amount of money and a reasonable moving out time (we’re hoping for December 1?), but in the meantime, it’s kind of funny, and a little annoying, but what can you do? It rocks rent-wise. PSB is paying me back for various things by paying some of my rent each month - now that there’s three of us paying, she’s paying for MOST of my rent, and I’m paying $120.

As for a mini vacation for me, I’m not going anywhere. The indoor cat wants to stay inside. I was thinking about maybe heading down to AC, but I think I’ll just play online instead. I think I’m getting a belated sushi dinner on Saturday night, and then PSB will be back Sunday, and we have to go wedding ring shopping - the artist who she wants to buy from will be up at Lincoln Center at some fair, so we have to go up there to check out the rings and see if she wants it - and then we’re having some people over to celebrate the Temple burning out on the playa.

Me and Jax at the Waimea Canyon

When I copied the photos off of my camera, I had over 500 pictures to sort through. Here is the first album, all G or PG rated.

PSB found a Flickr set already.

And here’s Laughing Squid with an ongoing report.

Absinthe (boo!) vs. La Vie (HOORAY!!!)

As you may have read, PSB and I went to Absinthe last Saturday night, and last night we went to La Vie. For both shows, we were expecting a Cirque du Soleil like experience, but this was only the case for one of them. The difference between the two shows was astounding. Absinthe had amazing acrobats/arialists - there was a two woman arial routine on a large metal square hung from the middle of the tent that was fabulous, and they also had a roller skating team who twirled around in circles in the middle of a tiny platform, which was AWESOME. The rest of the acrobatic acts were excellent as well. But for some reason, Absinthe was hosted by a “comic” named The Gazillionaire, with his sidekick, a ditzy redhead named Penny. The Gazillionaire was nothing but obnoxious and crude the entire time he was onstage, and apparently that’s his shtick. It’s a lousy shtick. He took great pride in making fun of/humiliating various audience members, some of which were obviously uncomfortable. At one point, he kept trying to pressure some poor guy to let him hump his head, and the guy refused, over and over. It was really awkward for the rest of us in the audience, and distressing to me personally. I thought Penny had a bit of a funny routine at one point, where she went off on a fantasy of some crazy sex with one of the acrobats. For the most part, however, they did nothing for the show. There was also supposed to be burlesque, and it may be the fact that I’m straight, but watching a bunch of guys get their clothes ripped off does not even come close to burlesque, nor does watching some guy pretend to eat out the bottom half of a mannequin for five minutes, nor does watching a guy and a girl in matching sweatshirts/sweatpants mock hump each other. There was also a singer, who I really liked at first, but by the end of the show got rather grating. At one point he chose to sing a gospel song - who wants to hear a gospel song in the middle of what’s supposed to be a sexy Cirque-esque show? Like the songs he chose, the entire show just felt disjointed, with a wide range in quality of performance. I’d see something I’d really like, and then two minutes later see something I hated. It was not the show I wanted it to be, the show I had heard so many amazing things about last year.

I left Absinthe highly disapointed, and I would have been pissed if I had paid full price for it - I got a discount on the tickets, which were still rather expensive. . . I was hoping that La Vie would make up for it. Fortunately, it more than did. Everything that I was hoping for in Absinthe was more than abundant in La Vie. La Vie was an actual show, with a theme, that we had all entered Purgatory and were on line to have our lives looked at by the host, a charming French gentleman who played with the audience, but was kind and charming and actually funny. The acts were built into the theme - the way that different people lived their lives was the way they were presented on stage, and their acrobatics became a part of it, whether it was the man who lost the use of his legs when he had a plane built out of shoddy materials and subsequently crashed with it, or the woman who had gone mad, and danced on and around her hospital gurney while tied up in a straight jacket, which she danced in and out of as well. One of the characters was a new arrival - he literally fell through the ceiling to arrive. He and the host build on their relationship as he figures out where he is and what’s going on, and in a joyous celebration at the end of the first act, the two of them perform the most amazing diabolo routine I have ever seen - tossing the top, tossing the control sticks, passing back and forth instantaneously, grabbing the top with the strings in the blink of an eye - it was just phenomenal. The second act was just as alluring, my favorite part being a ukulele fueled “bullfight” between the host and the “new guy”, a tango routine involving three different woman, all dancing as their personalities (my favorite being the crazy woman), and a dance routine involving the host and his forbidden love, an extremely flexible woman, who was often above his head and then on the floor in the blink of an eye. It was just fantastic. It was everything I had wanted, and it was what Absinthe was supposed to be.

The weird part is, La Vie is so much the better show, and the tickets are cheaper!

Here’s links to both shows, but in my opinion, skip Absinthe and don’t miss La Vie!!!

Leaving/Coming Back

Twins A and B are off to Burning Man tomorrow - have a great Burn! Be safe! Say hi to Larry for me!

Twin D is maxing and relaxing in Hawaii, still on his honeymoon. He’ll be back Sunday.

I’m sitting at my desk, looking at all the paper. I should really do something about it.

But it’s so much more fun to surf! Much more fun!

Go See This Movie!

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters was released nationally today. This was the movie I was lucky enough to see in Aspen this past March. It is AMAZING! Go see it!

I really want to see Superbad, too. I somehow never saw Knocked Up. . .

Out again.

My cold rapidly took over the rest of my head through the night, and I woke up a half hour ago feeling like death, so I’m staying home again. I feel a little guilty staying home from work twice in one week, but it’s not like I played hooky either time - I was legitimately sick both days! I bought some real Sudafed (with ephedrine) from the pharmacy, so I’ll start pumping that. We have tickets for Absinthe tonight, so I need to get well enough to go to that - all the tickets are in my name, so I have to be there to get them! Now I’m not sure about going upstate tomorrow morning either. . . we’ll see how the day goes.

Twin D and Jax’s Wedding

So last Sunday was the big day, but due to various ailments, one of which I’m suffering right now, I’ve been too lazy to blog about it. Here’s a recap: Twin A, Kissyfur, PSB and I rented a car and schelpped out to Long Island Saturday afternoon, and stayed at a hotel near Roosevelt Field (I threatened them that we were going to go shopping all night long). We all crashed in one room, which wasn’t bad except for the fact that due to the way the air conditioner worked, the room would be either 10,000 degrees or -10,000 degrees. . . my parents held a “rehearsal” dinner for family members that night (there were some sort of family politics going on that involved there being two dinners. I don’t know anything about it, and it’s none of my business. Perhaps D can explain if he cares to) at an excellent Italian restaurant a few minutes away. After the dinner, we went back to relax. I ended up watching “Stir of Echoes” on TV while everyone fell asleep - pretty good movie, I thought. I love Ileanna Douglas.

Sunday morning A, B, and I hit a diner (A demanded more food than just the continental breakfast the hotel had), then went back, we all changed into our tuxes, and drove over to the Jewish Center where the wedding was to be held. We were there super early, since we had to vacate our hotel room, so we sat around until other people arrived. We learned that there was a “groom’s chamber” where we could go hang out, which had a TV and a PS2, but no games for it! Annoying. I would have brought something if I had remembered (I think D told me there was a PS2 a long time ago, but I forgot). Eventually we were called to take photos with the bride and groom and the immediate family, and then with the bridal party. We were then given a two minute rehearsal walkthrough, and were spaced on the bimah (the “stage” of the sanctuary room where the ceremony took place). Then, before we knew it, the ceremony started, we all walked in, the rabbi did his thing, we all said our little prayers (there are seven Jewish wedding prayers, and D had us, Jax’s brothers, and the two fathers say them instead of the rabbi), and before you know it D and Jax were sucking face on the bimah! It was a nice ceremony, but a little dry - the rabbi said a lot of stuff in Hebrew without bothering to translate, leaving us in the dark. (Jax and D, by the way, both looked great. Here’s a photo of the two of them:)

Oy, such an attractive couple!

The cocktail hour was, in a word, impressive. There were a bunch of different stations - a fajita bar, a sushi bar (guess where I spent a lot of time?), dumplings, Chinese food, caviar, Jewish deli. . . PSB and I both thought to ourselves “they have more food at their cocktail hour than we’re going to have at our entire wedding!” Everything I ate was excellent. The bar was all top shelf as well, which was great, but knowing that I had to give a best man’s speech at some point, and then eventually had to drive home, I didn’t booze it up.

After the cocktail hour, we moved into the main room for a tasty dinner. I gave my speech which everyone really seemed to enjoy - thank you to PSB for helping me work on it. We all danced a lot and ate a lot, and had a great time. The band stopped playing at 9:30, and most of the party was still there - no one wanted to leave! We eventually gathered everyone and drove back to the city - A, B (who caught the ride home), and Kissyfur ended up jumping out in Queens when I stopped to gas up - it made more sense for them to call a car from there (right by the Queensborough Bridge) than to get one from Manhattan.

PSB and I got home around 11:30 and headed to bed. Around 3:30 a.m. I started having a nightmare where my stomach was hurting terribly. I then woke up and discovered it wasn’t just a dream. . . after a few trips to the bathroom and not much sleep, I decided to take a sick day on Monday, where I barely had enough energy to get up from the TV, except for the fact that I needed to bring back the rental tux, and I needed to meet Twin A to give him his tie, which he had left in the car by mistake. . .

I felt better by Tuesday. Yesterday, however, I started coming down with a cold, and today, I’m in the middle of it. I’m trying to stay hydrated and flush it out of me, as we have tickets to Absinthe at the Spiegeltent tomorrow night, and then a bunch of parties on Saturday. . .

Also, on top of everything else, my manager went into the hospital on Tuesday. Early Tuesday morning while she was in a meeting she seemed to almost faint - after examining her, the onsite doctors thought it was a TIA, but after 24 hours of being poked, prodded, and stuffed into various machines, they couldn’t find a thing wrong with her, so they released her last night, and she went home today. The only “good” part about all this is that the move to the new floor and the horrible new cube has been postponed for at least a month.

So I think I’m all caught up, except for the wedding kvetch, which I refuse to do until the current issue which I need to kvetch about is resolved. There’s another kvetch in the works as well. But I guess there’s always kvetches in the works, no?
